Manchester United fans have named Diogo Dalot and Donny Van de Beek in their preferred starting line-up to take on Young Boys tonight in the Champions League.
United return to the group stages of Europe’s elite tournament this evening when they travel to Switzerland for their opening game, fresh off an impressive 4-1 win over Newcastle at the weekend in Cristiano Ronaldo ‘s second debut for the club.
After four Premier League games and an international break, some fans are seeing this as a potential opportunity to rotate the squad and give some players a chance, namely with Dalot and Van de Beek.
MEN Sport posted a survey that allowed fans to pick their ideal starting line-up for the game and after thousands of votes from Reds, here is the team they want to see:
David De Gea – Dean Henderson didn’t travel with the squad so David De Gea keeping his place in the starting lineup was a no-brainer. His form is making Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s decision easier for when the academy man is back and ready to compete.
Diogo Dalot – The Portuguese right-back spent last season on loan at AC Milan and impressed enough to convince Solskjaer to keep him around this year. He’s yet to get significant game time this season and fans think now is the perfect opportunity to give him some minutes.
Raphael Varane – “Champions League Varane” is the moniker he arrived with so it would almost be rude not to include him in the first team for this competition. He’s made a great start to his career so far and should continue that in this game too.
Harry Maguire – The skipper is the first name on the team sheet in defence under Solskjaer and is a fan favourite too, so of course he’s included.
Luke Shaw – Shaw doesn’t have much competition for his spot right now with Alex Telles still recovering from an ankle injury, but his performances have been good enough to keep him in the team anyway and fans absolutely love him.
Donny Van de Beek – He says he can play as a number six in this United team and there may be no better time to show that than in Europe against Young Boys. Van de Beek is included in the fan’s 11 in a deeper midfield role and he will be desperate to start.
Paul Pogba – The in-form creator in the team, Pogba has seven assists in four games so far for United this season and fans are keen to see him continue that in Europe so he once again gets the nod in the centre of the pitch.
Bruno Fernandes – He was the star Portuguese player in the league up until about two weeks ago, but United fans haven’t forgotten how much Fernandes has done for the club over the last two years and he retains his place in the midfield three.
Jadon Sancho – The most expensive addition to the club this season, Sancho hasn’t really hit the ground running yet but is showing improvement with each display. He may find himself with a bit more space and time in Europe and fans aren’t ready to see him out of the side just yet.
Cristiano Ronaldo – Was this ever in doubt? Ronaldo could feasibly be named in every team he’s available for this season, simply because he’s just that good. And after two goals at the weekend, would anyone back against him from adding to his record as the Champions League’s top goalscorer ever?
