Harry Maguire is effectively out of Manchester United’s Europa League final after he was unable to participate in their final training session.

Maguire was one of the first players off the team coach when it arrived at Stadion Gdansk but watched from the United dugout as his teammates began their session.

The United captain sustained ankle ligament damage in the 3-1 win at Aston Villa on May 9 and only has a week to prove his fitness to make England coach Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for the European Championship.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer broke off from watching the first-team train at Stadion Gdansk and walked over to the opposite side to sit with Maguire for nearly 10 minutes while coaches Michael Carrick, Kieran McKenna and Martyn Pert continued to put the players through their paces. Maguire went down the tunnel around 15 minutes into United’s session.

Solskjaer will wait until Wednesday morning to confirm his starting line-up but Axel Tuanzebe or Eric Bailly are expected to replace Maguire.

“We’ve prepared well,” Solskjaer said ahead of the final. “Anthony didn’t make it, Phil didn’t make it and Harry’s gonna jog up and down the sideline a bit, I reckon, and he’ll probably try to join in.”
