Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Sir Alex Ferguson can help the Manchester United players ahead of the Europa League final after he travelled to Gdansk with the squad.
The legendary former United manager flew out with the squad on Monday and is staying in the team hotel ahead of Wednesday’s final against Villarreal.
While Ferguson won’t speak directly with the squad ahead of United’s latest European final, Solskjaer is happy for any of his players to pick the brains of the Scot ahead of the game against the La Liga side.
Solskjaer and some of his players attended the premiere of Never Give In, the documentary about Ferguson’s life directed by his son Jason, last week and the current United boss admits he owes so much of his career to the man who first took him to Old Trafford.
“He flew out with ys yesterday. Some of us and some of the players went to see Jason’s documentary, I sat there thinking about this man and what he’s done for the club, he’s a special man, he’s an encyclopedia of football, even though I got him on a quiz question yesterday!” said Solskjaer.
“Just to have him around when we eat, in the restaurant, if the players’ wonder about something they can ask him and he’s always available for a chat because he has this club in his heart. I hope he enjoys it tomorrow because I owe most of my career to him, so hopefully he will enjoy it.”
While Ferguson won’t be addressing the team as a group, Bruno Fernandes believes some of his messages could come across to the squad anyway given Solskjaer’s apprenticeship under United’s greatest manager.
“We have a coach who spent a lot of time with Sir Alex so everything he could say he already knows, he could pass that message to us,” he said.
“The team is confident, we trust ourselves, we know what we have to do. This is our moment to enjoy this final and try to do our best.”
United checked into their hotel in the Polish city on Monday and Luke Shaw said the players had seen Ferguson, but called on motivation to come from within for Wednesday night’s final.
“I wouldn’t expect him to speak to us, we see him around the hotel at the moment a little bit, within the team we’ve got to inspire ourselves and focus on what we need to do as a group,” he said.
“We don’t need people to inspire us tomorrow, as much as a legend as he is. We need people inside the group to inspire us ourselves.”
