Manchester United’s supporters have hit back at Jose Mourinho after he claimed Ben Chilwell is more worthy of a place in England’s Euro 2020 team than Luke Shaw.
On the day the delayed 24-team tournament begins, the Roma head coach and former United manager was asked to pick his preferred Three Lions side to face Croatia.
Having been openly critical of Shaw while they worked together at Old Trafford, Mourinho opted for Chilwell over the United defender – while he also left out teammate Marcus Rashford.
Dean Henderson was chosen by the Portuguese between the sticks at the expense of Jordan Pickford.
However, ahead of a crunch Group D opener against the Croats it was a ‘loaded’ decision at left-back which sparked the attention of United fans.
“I know that he plays normally at Chelsea with a five, but he is intelligent and he covers the space, the diagonals that come inside very well. He is dangerous in attack. He’s good in the air, he’s good in set-pieces. He can defend well a possible long build-up from Croatia on the first phase.”
Asked if he had thought about Shaw, Mourinho added: “No, no. I think he had a good season, clearly an evolution in terms of emotion, professionalism – clearly that. I think Chilwell has something more, especially with the ball and the way he thinks. He’s very calm under pressure. I like Chilwell, I would go with this back four.”
