While we have all been marvelling in awe at the brilliance that Mason Mount and Phil Foden have produced in the Premier League this season, another young English talent is making headlines on the continent for Borussia Dortmund.

It seems outlandish to suggest that Jadon Sancho has gone under the radar considering Manchester United have tried to sign him three times in recent years, but his ability is perhaps underappreciated, with bias towards Premier League players prevalent

Dortmund signed Sancho from Manchester City for just £8m in 2017 and their record of nurturing young, exciting talent was indicative of where the winger’s career trajectory might fall, but even an optimist mightn’t have predicted the extent of his meteoric rise.

Since bravely bidding farewell to Manchester, Sancho has thrived in Germany and his decision to develop with an elite European side will serve as an example for generations to come, with Jude Bellingham now following in his footsteps abroad.

The outcome of both of those moves has proved just what inspired decisions they were from both players to move to Dortmund, but while both are reaching dazzling heights, particularly Sancho, it seems the general consensus has Mount and Foden ahead.

It’s only natural, especially as the European Championship approaches with England, that comparisons will be made between Mount, Foden and Sancho, but it’s important to consult the data to analyse all three youngsters to make accurate conclusions.

Despite Sancho playing in fewer league games than Mount and Foden, he created 11 assists in the German top-flight, which is more than double the hauls of both Mount and Foden, who both fashioned five assists in the Premier League this term.

However, In the modern-day game, it’s important to use Expected Assists (xA) in the analysis of playmakers, because xA is a true reflection of a player’s ability to create chances. The metric measures the likelihood that a given pass will become a goal assist.
