Manchester United are likely to play a large chunk of their pre-season games in the United Kingdom this summer, ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

The MEN understands United are still finalising their plans for pre-season but are likely to explore options in the UK, with some potential for games abroad depending on the covid-19 situation. It is not believed United will travel outside Europe, due to the Government restrictions and guidelines still in place with regards to foreign travel.

Last month, MEN Sport reported United were considering two games against Liverpool, which are likely to be played at Old Trafford and Anfield, as well as games in Scandinavia and Malta. Those plans are still under consideration, though United are considering other opponents.

United will not seek a far-flung pre-season tour destination this summer, as per previous years when they’ve jetted to Australia and Asia (2019), or the United States (2018). The club was considering a tour in India in 2020 before covid hit, torpedoing all their plans last year. In the end United played only one pre-season game — a 1-0 defeat away at Aston Villa — between the rescheduled seasons beginning and ending last summer.

Previously, United’s most recent UK-based pre-season friendly was when they drew 1-1 with AC Milan in August 2019, before winning on penalties. The game took place at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.

It has been confirmed that United’s youngsters will play three pre-season friendlies in Northern Ireland this summer, to mark the 20th anniversary of their 1991 Milk Cup victory. The famed Class of 92 team including David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville won the prestigious Under-16s tournament at Coleraine Showgrounds.

United will make an official announcement confirming their pre-season games in the coming days and weeks. The fixtures are likely to begin in mid July, with the European Championship finishing on July 11.
