Manchester United are making progress over a potential move for Pau Torres in the summer transfer window.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are understood to be going ‘all out’ for a new centre-back signing this summer with the Villarreal centre-back still under consideration by the club.
MEN Sport understand there is growing belief a deal can be struck to sign Torres in the current window, although any move is likely to take place later in the summer following his involvement in the ongoing European Championship with Spain.
Torres, 24, was one of the players placed on United’s five-man list of prospective defensive signings in the New Year, with fellow target Raphael Varane also included.
United viewed the Europa League final last month as Torres’s last ‘audition’ before they decided on their prime centre-back target, with club officials believed to have been impressed by his role in Villarreal’s penalty shootout victory.
While the club are edging nearer to a deal to sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund they are still prioritising a move for a new centre-back and Torres’ natural ability as a left-footer make him an ideal candidate to be the long-term partner for club captain Harry Maguire.
Torres has a release clause in his current deal which lies in the region of €60million after he penned a contract extension until 2024 two years ago.
However, there is some belief Villarreal could yet consider a player-plus-cash offer for Torres if any suitors are unable to match such a figure in the current financial climate, although their priority would be to sell him for cash only.
United are still believed to be keeping their options open in the summer window and are considering a range of back-up options across the board should their plans need to be adjusted.
The club saw a £50m package to sign Varane rebuffed by Real Madrid but remain in dialogue with the Spanish club and will seek a compromise over the fee, but are reluctant to meet Madrid’s £80m valuation as the defender is out of contract next year.
United have also submitted an improved second offer for Borussia Dortmund winger Sancho understood to be worth more than £75million.
The new offer would see United pay a higher amount up front, with the rest of the fee in achievable add-ons. Dortmund are considering the offer but value Sancho at more than £80million.
