Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decides to target Erling Haaland over Harry Kane

Manchester United have decided against making a move for England captain Harry Kane this summer and will instead battle for the signature of Dortmund striker Erling Haaland in 2022.

Kane, 27, has intimated he wants to leave Tottenham this summer and will discuss his future with chairman Daniel Levy during the off-season.

While United would love to have Kane, Spurs value him at around £150million and that would comfortably make the England skipper the British transfer record during a time of financial upheaval at Old Trafford.

United have lost around £150m in revenue since the pandemic started and it’s unclear if clubs will be able to welcome supporters back to full capacity stadiums next term.

Solskjaer is keen on signing Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho but buying the England midfielder would require most of United’s summer budget, leaving no room left for a move for Kane.

The Daily Mail therefore claim United will abandon their interest in Kane and will instead try to sign Haaland in 2022.

The Norwegian, 20, finished this season as the Champions League’s top scorer and is valued at around £130m by Dortmund.

However, a clause in his contract with the Bundesliga giants means he can leave for around £62m in 2022 and United will battle the likes of Manchester City, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain for his signature.

United’s trump card in the race is Haaland’s relationship with Solskjaer. The United boss gave Haaland his first team debut at Molde at the age of 16 and the pair remain in close contact.

Edinson Cavani’s recent 12-month extension means United can afford to shelve plans to sign a striker for another year, with Solskjaer delighted at the Uruguayan’s impact at the club.
